Breast Lift and Reduction
Breast LiftOver time, a woman’s breasts may begin to lose their youthful shape. The natural aging process or multiple pregnancies can cause the breasts to lose volume and sag. Deflated, sagging, or drooping breasts can be returned to a more youthful shape with breast lift surgery. Known for his skill in a variety of procedures for the breasts, Dr. Rankin performs breast lift surgery at one of the seven local hospitals where he is on staff or in his private surgical suite. The Breast Lift ProcedureThe techniques Dr. Rankin employs during the breast lift procedure vary from patient to patient and are determined after the initial consultation. For many patients, Dr. Rankin makes either a lollipop- or an anchor-shaped incision. Outlining the nipple, running vertically down the center of the breast, and along the breast crease, this incision allows Dr. Rankin to remove excess skin and relocate the nipples to a higher position on the breasts. Depending on the aesthetic result the patient wishes to achieve, breast implants may be inserted during the breast lift procedure to give the breasts a fuller, rounder appearance. Some women will only require a small upper areolar incision or a circle around the areola to get the required lift. Other woman can get a smaller lifting by simply placing a breast implant without additional incisions. Dr. Rankin always uses the least amount of scarring to achieve the best possible breast shape. After Breast Lift Surgery After surgery, the breasts are bandaged and the patient is fitted with a surgical bra. For the first few days after breast lift surgery, patients may experience bruising and discomfort. Any pain can be effectively controlled with a pain reliever prescribed by Dr. Rankin. Although typically able to engage in light activity within a few days, patients should wait one to two weeks until returning to their normal routine. Breast Reduction
The Breast Reduction ProcedureSimilar to breast lift surgery, the breast reduction procedure often involves the creation of the same incisions necessary for breast lift surgery. Circling the nipple and continuing down the curve of the breast and sometimes along the crease, this type of incision allows Dr. Rankin to remove excess tissue and skin. After carefully and skillfully sculpting each breast so that they are natural-looking and symmetrical, Dr. Rankin closes the incisions and bandages the area. After Breast Reduction SurgeryFor the first few days after breast reduction surgery, some pain is normal and can be relieved with prescription pain medication. Many patients feel able to engage in light activity a couple of days after surgery, but it is important not to lift or push anything for several weeks. Patients are typically able to return to work in a week or two.
